A beast is any mortal creature that is not intelligent or civilized enough to be a person. Unlike plants, they could move, see, hear, feel, smell, taste and eat. While most beasts were wild and dangerous, some could be domesticated and tamed by people. There were five main types of beast:

  • Mammals: hairy beasts that gave live birth
  • Reptiles: scaly, cold-blooded beasts that laid eggs
  • Birds: feathered, egg-laying beasts that could usually fly
  • Fish: scaly, water-dwelling beasts
  • Bugs: very small, widespread beasts with exoskeletons
  • Monsters: usually slimy, usually dangerous beasts that inhabited the dark and foul places
